They’re significantly greener, for example, they’re quiet, efficient and they can often lead to a reduction in energy bills. Take a look online at various home improvement websites nowadays and there’s a good chance you’ll see articles about them. If you find yourself intrigued by the prospect, you may have wondered how they work. Here’s the information you need.
In effect, a ground source heat pump (GSHP) utilises the heat found in the ground outside the property and converts it into usable heat in the home or business premises. This sounds simple enough, of course, but in fact the science behind the process is more complicated. Pleasingly, the end result is an energy source that’s reliable, affordable and free of carbon emissions.
As part of the installation process, a loop of pipelines is installed beneath your garden or patio, and this loop contains thermal transfer fluid, which is a mixture of water and antifreeze. It’s perhaps a little surprising to learn that below-surface soil contains significant amounts of heat, even during cold weather, and this heat is then absorbed into the fluid.
This fluid isn’t suitable for heating the home at this stage, of course, but once it passes through a heat exchanger it can be used to heat radiators or underfloor heating systems. It can also be used to provide hot water for the home. The consistency of the heat in the outdoor soil means the GSHP will be able to work effectively and efficiently throughout the year.
For home and business owners who are keen to do their bit in the race to net zero, a GSHP provides an extremely attractive proposition. Your property will be suitable if you have enough space outside for the installation, and if you don’t have restrictions related to protected buildings, etc. As always, if you have any doubts, you only need to ask a specialist in this fast-moving sector.
